Broncos RB Melvin Gordon (illness) ruled out vs. Patriots

The Denver Broncos will be without running back Melvin Gordon on Sunday.

Gordon will not travel with the team for its Saturday road trip to New England, NFL Network’s Mike Giardi reports. Gordon, who was listed as questionable, has been effectively ruled out.

On Friday, Gordon came down with a non-COVID-19 illness which forced him to miss practice. Saturday’s news caps off a rocky week for Gordon, who was charged with a DUI in Denver on Tuesday night.

The good news for the Broncos is that they will getting back RB Phillip Lindsay this Sunday. Lindsay, who hasn’t played since Week 1, was activated from injured reserve this week after recovering from a toe injury. Gordon has been a serviceable lead back for the Broncos in Lindsay’s absence; rushing for 281 yards with an average of 4.3 yards per carry and leading the team with four total touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving).

The Broncos have also ruled out tight end Noah Fant for Sunday. Fant was listed as questionable with an ankle injury.

In transactional news, the Broncos have released quarterback Blake Bortles and promoted defensive lineman Sylvester Williams in a correlating move. The Broncos also elevated running back Jeremy Cox from the practice squad to the active roster.

  • Arizona Cardinals linebackers Devon Kennard (calf) and Dennis Gardeck (foot), and offensive lineman D.J. Humphries (back) are questionable for Monday. LB Kylie Fitts (hamstring) is out. Arizona also announced it has placed guard J.R. Sweezy (elbow) and defensive lineman Rashard Lawrence (calf) on injured reserve.
  • The New England Patriots are placing running back Sony Michel, guard Shaq Mason and defensive end Derek Rivers on the reserve/COVID-19 list, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported. The team also elevated offensive tackle Caleb Benenoch to the practice squad and designated tight end Rashod Berry, defensive end Nick Thurman and receiver Isaiah Zuber as COVID-19 replacements.
  • Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins (hamstring) and guard Kelechi Osemele (knees) have been officially ruled out vs. the Bills. Tackle Mitchell Schwartz (back) is questionable. The team announced Osemele will be placed on injured reserve.
  • Buffalo Bills tight end Dawson Knox (calf) has been officially ruled out of Monday’s game vs. the Chiefs. Cornerback Tre’Davious White (back), linebacker Matt Milano (pectoral), guard Quinton Spain (foot), and wide receiver John Brown (knee) are listed as questionable.
  • Houston Texans tight end Jordan Akins (ankle/concussion), running back Buddy Howell (hamstring) and linebackerPeter Kalambayi (hamstring) will not travel with the team to Tennessee and have been ruled out for Sunday’s game, per NFL Network’s James Palmer. The team also elevated safety Jonathan Owens from the practice squad to the active roster.
  • Jacksonville Jaguars safety Josh Jones was fined $4,852 for a helmet hit on Texans wideout Brandin Cooks last week. Jones was ejected in that game for unnecessary roughness. The team also utilized a practice squad standard elevation spot on defensive end Jabaal Sheard. The team is also placing practice squad offensive lineman KC McDermott on the reserve/COVID-19 list, per Pelissero via an informed source. Defensive end Josh Mauro, who is suspended, is also going on the reserve/COVID-19 list along with 11 other practice squad players, Pelissero added.
  • Former Cowboys defensive tackle David Irving, who was reinstated by the commissioner Friday, is visiting the Las Vegas Raiders, per the transaction wire.
  • The Baltimore Ravens have placed defensive tackle Brandon Williams on the reserve/COVID list. Pelissero reported that Williams came in close contact with an infected person but has not tested positive for COVID-19.
  • The Atlanta Falcons have placed defensive end John Cominsky on the reserve/COVID list. Pelissero reports Cominsky tested positive for COVID-19.
  • The Tennessee Titans promoted cornerback Kareem Orr to 53-man roster. The team also elevated receiver Cameron Batson and linebacker Daren Bates from practice squad for Sunday’s game.
  • Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy told reporters Saturday that he’s “definitely encouraged” about the chances of linebacker Leighton Vander Esch returning to action on Monday night. Vander Esch was activated this week from injured reserve after fully recovering from a fractured collarbone suffered in Week 1.
  • The Tampa Bay Buccaneers elevated defensive lineman Jeremiah Ledbetter from the practice squad.
  • The Green Bay Packers activated receiver Equanimeous St. Brown from the reserve/injured list.
  • The San Francisco 49ers activated receiver Richie James to the active roster from the injured reserve list. The team also activated defensive lineman Darrion Daniels and WR Kevin White from the team’s practice squad
  • The Indianapolis Colts have activated defensive tackle Sheldon Day from injured reserve and is set to make his debut with the team on Sunday. In a corresponding move, the team waived DT Eli Ankou and released safety Ibraheim Campbell. The Colts also announced the signing of wide receiver Marcus Johnson to the active roster from the practice squad, and elevated guard Jake Eldrenkamp and WR DeMichael Harris from the practice squad.
  • The Philadelphia Eagles have activated defensive end Vinny Curry and safety Will Parks from injured reserve. The Eagles also elevated tight end Jason Croom and safety Elijah Riley from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s game vs. the Ravens.
  • The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback David Blough to the active roster from the practice squad. The team also announced guard Joe Dahl has been activated from injured reserve and tight end Isaac Nauta has been elevated from the practice squad to the active roster. Cornerback Chris Jones was released.
  • The Cleveland Browns have elevated safety Elijah Benton to the active roster from the practice squad.
  • The Cincinnati Bengals have signed defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie to the active roster from the practice squad.
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers elevated receiver Deon Cain from the practice squad to the active/inactive roster.
  • Miami Dolphins elevated defensive tackle Benito Jones off the practice squad.
