Lawmakers Led ‘Reconnaissance’ Tours Of The Capitol Ahead Of Last Week’s Riots, Democratic Congresswoman Alleges

Topline

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.) has claimed that she witnessed some of her congressional colleagues escorting people through the Capitol — describing it as “reconnaissance” — a day before the violent riots by Trump supporters at the location which left five people including a police officer dead.

Key Facts

Speaking in a Facebook Live video on Tuesday, Sherrill said that she plans to hold accountable “those members of Congress who had groups coming through the Capitol that I saw on Jan. 5 for reconnaissance for the next day.”

She also vowed to impeach the president and to make sure he never runs for office again or receives access to classified materials

The congresswoman did not name any of the lawmakers she alleged were conducting these “reconnaissance” tours but noted that they had abetted the president’s actions, implying that she was referring to Republicans.

Sherrill added that she found later that members of the invading mob “had zip ties, were wearing body armor and were looking to take prisoners… members of Congress.”

Key Background

Sherrill’s allegation comes as investigators and lawmakers are trying to understand the planning and coordination behind last week’s violent assault on the Capitol which followed an inflammatory speech by President Donald Trump in which he made various false claims about the election being stolen from him. Several members of Congress have said that they feared for their safety during the riots. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) told her followers in an Instagram Live video: “I thought I was going to die.” Sarah Groh, the chief of staff of another ‘Squad’ member Ayana Pressley told the Boston Globe, “Every panic button in my office had been torn out — the whole unit,” adding that no rationale was offered as to why such a thing would happen. Groh noted that she, Pressley and her husband continued to remain vigilant as they were being escorted to a safe location as they did not know or trust the officers escorting them.
